Anyone know the symptoms of an automatic transmission dieing? If I'm at an idle and give the gas a nice tap, you'll hear a sweaky noise like rubber for a split second, then it goes......and it kicks in hard when it does go.

Yep. Sounds like its slipping. Have you had it serviced lately? About every 50,000 kms you should have it flushed and replace the filter. If you do that now (for about $100) it may help, otherwise it will continue to get worse and end costing a new tranny (~$2500)

I stoped at the garage and they said for $150 they would do a flush and put some kind of other thing in there and that usually works. I don't think it's ever been serviced.
And yeah, he said it would cost $1500 to change the transmission...on a car thats worth $500.....
k. I'll probably do that.

So, here is Canadian Tire (on the phone) telling me that if I empty the oil, put new oil, and put the adhesive, it might make it worst........I hate garages....
So Canadian Tire said to just check the level of transmission oil, and add the adhesive myself that they sell in store for $5 or something...... I think I'll try that before I go spend $150.....
eesh
I hate old cars too!

I trust the idiots at Canadian Tire about as far as I can throw them. Run away! Far away! They guys who work there are the ones who couldn't get a job anywhere else. Most of the the Kal Tire stores here in Calgary have a good reputation. Also Speedy brake. They do work other than brakes and I have had good luck with them too.
I f you haven't had the tranny serviced ever... DO IT! Spend the $100..... or so.... Consider the alternative....

Have you tired a tune up? I had a similar problem like that, and a tune up did the job. I think for an old car like that you could buy a kit and do it yourself. If not, the shop should do it for about $100. The kit costs about $60-$70.

so the latest scoop on my shitmobile, I thought I was going to have to drive it to the scrap yard as it was on its last leg, and I couldn't even get it going SLOWLY!...but then I figured out that it just had a hard time inbetween 1st and 2nd so if I pull the shifter into "1" then let it go into "2" it works like there isn't anything wrong with it....just don't give it gas while it's shifting!!! how long will this last? who knows!

haha dude its time for a new car, its on its last breath! Now would be a good time to buy a nissan maxima, those cars have amazingly great quality, especially those engines, but they eat up the gas, but u shouldn't have any problems with a maxima for about 60-70 thousand miles, thats it if u have a well built one straight from a Nissan dealer, but im happy with my jeep. =D and for as long as it will last 2 weeks at the most!

Auction! Auction! Auction! They're great! I've bought a few vehicles through the local car auction. What ya do is go to the auction yard the day (or a couple of days) before the auction (buy the red book from the auction house for about $10) and scout out what kinda cars they have to sell. If its a half decent auction they'll have something yer interested in. Pick a few cars, check their reserve price, pick a price that you are willing to spend. Remember this price. The day of the auction, hang out and watch all the action and when one of the cars you have picked show up get bidding! If two other guys are bidding on the same vehicle as you, let them go at it. Only jump in when one quits and do not go over the price that you decided the previous day! This is very important! If it goes over, ohh well. Walk away. There's always another! You usually get better deals on the ones at the end of the day. Most people have got what they came for! Anyway check it out. It's a fun day, esspecially if you like cars!
